Making Bath Salts

Nothing is as heavenly as a soak in a bathtub with the smell of lavender essential flowers coming in through the window. Give yourself the same heavenly feel with a relaxing soak at home by adding handcrafted bath salts to your bath.

Making your own scented bath salts is easy! Bath salts are a wonderful way to combine the theraputic benefits of our all-natural bath salt with the relaxing, soothing effects of aromatherapy. Creating your own unique bath salt recipe can be as simple as adding essential oils to bath salts, but adding dried herbs, colorants or other natural ingredients make the possibilities endless.

Here are the basic instructions and ingredients you’ll need to make your own bath salts.

2 cups Epsom Salts
1/2 cup sea salts or dead sea salt
1/2 cup baking soda (optional)
4 drops of  essential oil of your choice

1 cup crushed herbs of your choice (rosemary, green tea, rose petals, citrus peels, lavender, spearmint )

You can also consider adding to your bath 1 cup of milk,  1 spoon of  honey or base oils such as almond/olive/coconut/sesame.

Directions:

Place the salt mixture into a bowl. If you have chosen to include the optional herbs or oil  to your salt recipe, add it to the plain salts and mix well with a spoon or fork. Then, add the drops of your chosen essential oils. Again, mix very well. Add the mixture to a pretty jar, salt tube, or container that has a tight fitting lid. Salts that are kept in a container that is not air tight will lose their aroma more quickly.

After a day, you may wish to mix well again to ensure that the oils are well incorporated.

To Color to Your Salts:

For the most natural bath salt recipe, leave your bath salts uncolored. Certain exotic salts including Hawaiian Red Sea salt and Black Sea Pink salt are naturally colorful. Try mixing these salts with with Dead Sea or plain sea salt for a speckled effect.

Salt is mass-produced by evaporation of seawateror salt lakes, and also by mining rock salt.

Dead Sea Salt

  • One of the best types of salt for bath salt recipes.
  • Extremely rich in minerals and trace elements.
  • Highly therapeutic and rejuvenating.
  • Good for arthritis and muscle pain.
  • Helps reduce tension and increase relaxation.
  • Good for eczema and psoriasis. Gives you silky smooth skin.

Epsom Salt

  • Also an excellent salt for bath salt recipes.
  • Made primarily of magnesium and sulfates rather than sodium and chloride like other types of salt.
  • Softens and exfoliates the skin.
  • Eases pain by reducing swelling and inflammation.
  • Detoxifies the body.
  • Reduces tension, sedates the nervous system and relaxes muscles.

Himalayan Pink Salt

  • The most healing (but also most expensive, of course!) choice for bath salt recipes.
  • Mined from the Himalayan mountains (actually, this type of salt is also found in other mountains like Hawaii and others.)
  • Said to be the purest form of salt available.
  • Has an extremely high mineral content with over 84 minerals and trace elements; its color is the result of its high mineral and iron content.
  • Good for skin rashes, eczema, psoriasis and herpes.
  • Eases pain by reducing swelling and inflammation.
  • Lowers blood pressure.
  • Detoxifies the body.
  • Reduces tension, sedates the nervous system and relaxes muscles.
